Kulho / bowl
Tämän kulhon malli on peräisin Tomoko Fusen kirjasta "Fabulous Origami Boxes". Kulho on koottu neljästä palasta, joista kukin on taiteltu yhdestä neliönmuotoisesta paperista. Minulla on työpöydälläni pino näitä kulhoja. Säilytän niissä keskeneräisten moduliorigamien osia ja muuta pikkusälää. Yksi kulho toimii roskiksena.
The model of this "lamp-shaped bowl" is from Tomoko Fuse's book "Fabulous Origami Boxes". The bowl is assembled from four pieces, each folded from a sheet of square paper. The folding pattern is not very difficult, bult the folds must be done accurately, so that the joint become tight and the end result looks good. For the bowls in the photo I used rather sturdy 20 cm x 20 cm paper. I happened to have a pack of coloured paper with different strong patterns - I find this paper suits the model particularly well. When not used, the bowls can be piled on top of each other, so that they do not take much space. I have a pile of these bowls on my desk. I use them to store modular origami elements and other small objects. One bowl serves as a trash can.

Sonobe - dodekaedri/dodecahedron
Here it is - the most complicated of the Platonic sonobe assembies - the dodecahedron.
The dodecahedron is composed of 90 sonobe units. I claimed in my earlier posting that I do not have the patience to make this assembly, but after some encouragement and teasing from my friends I just had to do it.
Ensimmäiseksi valitsin viisi yhteensopivaa väriä. Käytin tukevahkoa helmiäispaperia. Otin viisi 15 cm x 15 cm arkkia kutakin väriä ja leikkasin jokaisen arkin neljäksi pienemmäksi arkiksi. Näin sain kaikkiaan sata arkkia, jossa oli kymmenen ylimääräistä arkkia möhlimisvaraa.
The first step was to select five matching colours. I used rather sturdy 'perlmuttpapier'. I took five 15 cm x 15 cm sheets of each colour and cut them into four smaller squares. That gave me a total of 100 sheets, leaving 10 extra.
Sitten taittelin 90 sonobe-yksikköä
I then folded 90 sonobe units.
Sonobe-versiossa viisikulmion paikalla on viiden kolmiopyramidin muodostama rengas.
Then I got to wonder why on Earth did I have to choose five colours. It turned out to be the most difficult number to assemble in a symmetric way. Six or three coulours would have been a better choice. But here it finally is - a dodecahedral sonobe assembly, composed of five colours
The dodecahedral shape is not very clear. A pure dodecahedron is a shape consisting of 12 regular pentagons. In the sonobe assembly a pentagon is replaced by five triangular pyramids arranged in a ring.

Elektra
Jatkan moduliorigamien parissa.
Keskimmäisessä kuvassa on yksi Elektran elementti. Tällaisia tarvitaan valmiiseen työhön 30 kappaletta.
Elementin terävä kärki pujotetaan toisen elementin taskuun ja lukitaan paikoilleen taivuttamalla siivekkeitä.
Alemmassa on kuvassa on sitten 12-osainen versio. Sen on alkuperäisen Mitchellin mallin pohjalta muunnellut Juho Pystynen. Erilaisen geometrian vuoksi elementit eivät lukitu yhteen samalla tavalla kuin isossa mallissa. Sen vuoksi vahvistin tämän mallin liimalla. 30-osainen pysyy hyvin koossa ilmankin.
This fine example of modular origami is called Elektra, designed by David Mitchell. The model shown in the photo has six different colors. I have also made one with three colours. I believe a one-coloured Elektra would be very beautiful too, but I have not attempted that, for the simple reason that origami paper usually comes in packets which contain many colours, a few sheets of each. If you want one colour only, you must either buy several packets, or cut larger sheets into several smaller sheets.
The colours of the 6-colour model are assembled in such a way that no two elements touching each other share the colour. The colours go in circles. Any 10-element (great) circle has every second element of same colour.
Elektra is constructed of 30 identical elements. One element is shown in the second photo. The sharp end of one element is inserted into the pocket of another element and locked into position by bending the 'wings'.
The last photo shows a simpler version made of 12 pieces. This is modified from the original Mitchell's model by Juho Pystynen. The folding pattern is slightly different, and the pieces do not lock in the same way as in the 30-piece model. For that reason I applied a little glue in this version.

Sonobe: Ikosaedri / Icosahedron
30 sonobe-palasta saa aikaan ikosaedrin, 20-tahokkaan.
Viime kerralla postasin kuvan oktaedrista. Dodekaedriin tarvitaan 90 osaa.
Toivottavasti geometriasta vähemmän kiinnostunutkin lukija osaa arvostaa näiden kappaleiden kauneutta.
An icosahedron can be assembled of 30 sonobe units. To be more precise, an icosahedron would be a shape with 20 triangular faces. This is an icosahedron with a triangular pyramid on each of its faces.
It took me a while to figure out a rule on how to assemble the colours in such a way that all pyramids have three distinct colours. The rule is this: the colours go in the same order clockwise (red-violet-black) everywhere except at four places, where they are in the opposite order. These four pyramids are located symmetrically around the icosahedron, as if as vertices of a tetrahedron.
I am quite sure the ancient Greeks knew this already two thousand years ago.
Last time I posted a photo of an octahedron. A reader with interest in geometry may notice that one Platonic solid, the dodecahedron, is missing from the sequence. In fact I do have instructions to build a dodecahedron, but, although it is simpler than icosahedron in the sense that it has a smaller number of faces (12), the faces are pentagons in shape, making the dodecahedron more complicated to assemble from sonobe units. A dodecahedron would require 90 sonobe units. I am afraid I do not have the patience for that.
I hope also a reader with less interest in geometry can appreciate the beauty of these shapes.

Sonobe: Oktaedri / Octahedron
Toinen on yksivärinen, toisessa on kolmea eri väri, neljä osaa kutakin. Yksivärinen itse asiassa miellyttää esteettistä silmääni enemmän, mutta toisaalta moniväristen kokoamisessa värien symmetrinen asettelu tuo oman vaikeutensa ja viehätyksensä.
The title is misleading, since strictly speaking this is not a octahedron. A genuine octahedron would be a regular shape with eight triangular faces. But if you imagine a triangle on the base of each of the triangular pyramids, there is actually an octahedron hidden there.
Octahedron is one of the 'Platonic solids', regular polyhedra that played an important role in the mathematics of the ancient Greeks, the others being terahedron, cube, dodecahedron, and icosahedron.
These octahedra were build using 12 sonobe units each. The three-coloured one has four pieces of each colous. Actually I find the one-coloured one more beautiful, but then I also enjoy the game of assembling colours in a symmetric way.

Toshie's jewels
Sonobe on peruselementti joita yhdistämällä voi rakentaa moduliorigameja. Eräänlainen origamien legopalikka siis. Nimensä sonobe on saanut keksijänsä Mitsonobu Sonoben mukaan.
Ensimmäisessä kuvassa on elementtejä eri valmistusvaiheissa.
Sonobe-yksikköjä voi taitella monellakin tavalla. Yhteistä niille on valmiin elementin muoto, tietynlainen suunnikas, sekä se että niissä on tasku, joka tekee mahdolliseksi yhdistää elementtejä pujottamalla yhden elementin kärki toisen taskuun, kuten toisessa kuvassa.
Yksinkertaisin mahdollinen sonobe-origami on 'Toshien jalokivi', jollaisia on alimmassa kuvassa. Siihen riittää kolme elementtiä. Muodoltaan se on epäsäännöllinen kuusitahokas. Kuudesta yksiköstä saa aikaan kuution.
Sonobe module is a unit used to build modular origami, named after its creator Mitsonobu Sonobe.
It is the lego brick of the origami world. A sonobe unit can be folded in a number of ways, but common to them all is the characteristic parallelogram shape of the final unit, and a pocket which allows to interlock the units.
The simplest sonobe shape is a hexahedron called Toshie's jewel, made of three elements. Six element can be combined into a cube.

Kukkaispallero / floral ball
Ylemmässä kuvassa on valmis pallo, alemmassa yksittäinen elementti.
Pallon valmistusohjeet löytyvät täältä:

Kyseessä on Japania ry:n julkaiseman Fin-Nippon-lehden origamiliite vuodelta 1994.
For some reason I especially like modular origami. In modular works an individual element is usually easy to fold, but making all the elements takes time and patienec, and combinig them may be complicated.
This floral ball is made of 36 identical elements, which are (against the most puristic rules of origami) attached with a string. The photo on the top shows the finished ball, the lower photo an individual element.
