Elektra

Jatkan moduliorigamien parissa.

Keskimmäisessä kuvassa on yksi Elektran elementti. Tällaisia tarvitaan valmiiseen työhön 30 kappaletta.
Elementin terävä kärki pujotetaan toisen elementin taskuun ja lukitaan paikoilleen taivuttamalla siivekkeitä.

Alemmassa on kuvassa on sitten 12-osainen versio. Sen on alkuperäisen Mitchellin mallin pohjalta muunnellut Juho Pystynen. Erilaisen geometrian vuoksi elementit eivät lukitu yhteen samalla tavalla kuin isossa mallissa. Sen vuoksi vahvistin tämän mallin liimalla. 30-osainen pysyy hyvin koossa ilmankin.

This fine example of modular origami is called Elektra, designed by David Mitchell.  The model shown in the photo has six different colors. I have also made one with three colours. I believe a one-coloured Elektra would be very beautiful too, but I have not attempted that, for the simple reason that origami paper usually comes in packets which contain many colours, a few sheets of each. If you want one colour only, you must either buy several packets, or cut larger sheets into several smaller sheets.

The colours of the 6-colour model are assembled in such a way that no two elements touching each other share the colour. The colours go in circles. Any 10-element (great) circle has every second element of same colour.

Elektra is constructed of 30 identical elements. One element is shown in the second photo. The sharp end of one element is inserted into the pocket of another element and locked into position by bending the 'wings'.

The last photo shows a simpler version made of 12 pieces. This is modified from the original Mitchell's model by Juho Pystynen. The folding pattern is slightly different, and the pieces do not lock in the same way as in the 30-piece model. For that reason I applied a little glue in this version.

Sonobe: Ikosaedri / Icosahedron

30 sonobe-palasta saa aikaan ikosaedrin, 20-tahokkaan.

Viime kerralla postasin kuvan oktaedrista. Dodekaedriin tarvitaan 90 osaa.

Toivottavasti geometriasta vähemmän kiinnostunutkin lukija osaa arvostaa näiden kappaleiden kauneutta.

An icosahedron can be assembled of 30 sonobe units. To be more precise, an icosahedron would be a shape with 20 triangular faces.  This is an icosahedron with a triangular pyramid on each of its faces.

It took me a while to figure out a rule on how to assemble the colours in such a way that all pyramids have three distinct colours. The rule is this: the colours go in the same order clockwise (red-violet-black) everywhere except at four places, where they are in the opposite order. These four pyramids are located symmetrically around the icosahedron, as if as vertices of a tetrahedron.

I am quite sure the ancient Greeks knew this already two thousand years ago.

Last time I posted a photo of an octahedron. A reader with interest in geometry may notice that one Platonic solid, the dodecahedron, is missing from the sequence. In fact I do have instructions to build a dodecahedron, but, although it is simpler than icosahedron in the sense that it has a smaller number of faces (12), the faces are pentagons in shape, making the dodecahedron more complicated to assemble from sonobe units. A dodecahedron would require 90 sonobe units. I am afraid I do not have the patience for that.

I hope also a reader with less interest in geometry can appreciate the beauty of these shapes.

Sonobe: Oktaedri / Octahedron

Toinen on yksivärinen, toisessa on kolmea eri väri, neljä osaa kutakin. Yksivärinen itse asiassa miellyttää esteettistä silmääni enemmän, mutta toisaalta moniväristen kokoamisessa värien symmetrinen asettelu tuo oman vaikeutensa ja viehätyksensä.

The title is misleading, since strictly speaking this is not a octahedron. A genuine octahedron would be a regular shape with eight triangular faces. But if you imagine a triangle on the base of each of the triangular pyramids, there is actually an octahedron hidden there.

Octahedron is one of the 'Platonic solids', regular polyhedra that played an important role in the mathematics of the ancient Greeks, the others being terahedron, cube, dodecahedron, and icosahedron.

These octahedra were build using 12 sonobe units each.  The three-coloured one has four pieces of each colous. Actually I find the one-coloured one more beautiful, but then I also enjoy the game of assembling colours in a symmetric way.

Pallo on yllättävän tukeva.

This model is called "Japanese Brocade". It is an example of "modular origami", meaning that it is assembled of several units, each of which is folded of one sheet of paper. This model is made six sheets. I used four colours.
